Singhamis an old-fashioned but rousing Hindi commercial film that pretty much restores one’s faith in this often-maligned brand of cinema. It has super-duper hit written all over it. No matter how dismissive you might be of films that have no space for shades of grey, chances are that Singham will disarm you, if only for a bit.
The film draws much of its fizz from the outstanding central performances. It is difficult to imagine any other Mumbai actor lending quite the kind of conviction that Devgn does to the character of the teed-off lawman. Devgn’s eyes do the talking; the six-pack, mercifully, remains a footnote.
Just as impressive is the mercurial Prakash Raj, who flips from menacing to comical and then back to menacing with such effortless aplomb that you can only sit back and marvel.
But the real soul of Singham is provided by the slew of Marathi actors in the cast, who breathe life into even the most minor of characters. Especially worth a mention is Ashok Saraf as a cynical and ageing constable who decides to give redemption a final shot.

Hera Pheri is a hilarious comedy where three innocent dreamers stumble upon a chance to earn lots of money but the wrong way. Shyam – Sunil Shetty – comes to Mumbai to apply for a job. But there is another applicant for the same job – Anuradha Panikkar – Tabu. Shyam decides to fight for his job and starts residing as a paying guest with Baburao Apte – Paresh Rawal, a garage owner. Raju – Akshay Kumar – is Baburao’s other paying guest who disapproves of Shyam right from the start. These are four people in dire need of money and only a miracle can save the situation. The miracle occurs in the form of a wrong number phone call. Kabira, a goon, has kidnapped the granddaughter of Devi Prasad, a rich businessman and is calling on Baburao’s phone number by mistake and demanding ransom. Raju hatches a daring plan – to talk with Kabira posing as Devi Prasad, and to talk with Devi Prasad posing as Kabira, ask him for double the amount of ransom money which Kabira had originally demanded save the girl, give half the money to Kabira and keep the rest. They carry out their plan with courage, but being innocent at heart they fear they will be duped. Though their plans fail at the end, their innocence and courage wins them back their respect & wealth.

This is a David Dhavan slapstick comedy starring Govinda as usual but also Amitabh in his third come back film after Mrityudaata and Major Saab. Although the other two have not been so succesful, I think this one will be. Govinda and Amitabh star as two police inspectors under the auspices of their senior, Anupam Kher. The beginning part is very reminiscent of the Will Smith film Bad Boys. Basically, the two heroes are sent to investigate a series of murders which have involved the bad guy Paresh Rawal. For a string of reasons, one of the main witnesses (Ramiya) will only speak to Pyare Mohan (Govinda) but at the time only Inspector Arjun (Amitabh) is available, so Amitabh has to assume the identity of Govinda’s character and take the lady to Pyare’s flat where he has to pretend to be Pyare. Obviously as a result, the real Pyare has to go to live in Arjun’s house, where Arjun’s mother and younger sister live. To spice matters up Govinda is in love with Arjun’s sister (played by Raveena Tandon) and Amitabh is not at all pleased by this.

All seems to be going well until just before the interval when Bade Miya (Amitabh again in a dual role) and Chote Miya (Govinda in a dual role) arrive. These two are petty theives from the village. Inevitably, confusion ensues as the two sets of characters are mistaken. Our inspector heroes are suspended for a string of misdemeanours which they have not been a party to and they cannot understand why! All of this leads up to a climactic ending.
This film is very funny. It won’t change your life or make you think but it will definitely keep you entertained for its duration. Amitabh is on top form. His comedy is up to Don or Laawaris standard and his dancing is great. He may not have the muscles of Sunny or Shahrukh but he is convincing in his action scenes. Govinda, however, is fantastic. He is now a master of this type of role after the likes of Raja Babu and Coolie no 1. Our female leads do not have much to do, but there is a very welcome guest appearance from Madhuri, including the song “Makhna”. This is a treat for film fans as it is the first combined screen appearance of Amitabh and Madhuri.
In short, I highly recommend this film but only to those who watch films to be entertained rather than educated or to have their lives changed!

Masti Express appeals in parts, not in its entirety. At places, the film is engaging, but there are times when it comes across as a yawn-inducing attempt. The screenplay writing is clearly the culprit here!
Masti Express tells the story of a father [Rajpal Yadav], who desperately tries to get his only child admitted to a renowned school and provide him education. His son is just another brat in a slum with an uninspiring future. The son is refused admission initially, but later, when the father faces a lot of obstacles and wins an auto rickshaw race with the help of the school kids, the Principal [Manoj Joshi] opens the doors of his school to the kid.
The director tries to pack just about everything to make the film palatable to the junta janardhan. He decides to pander to the commercial diktats by injecting songs on guest stars [filmed on Shankar Mahadevan and Kashmira Shah, respectively] and also instill comedy in the narrative. Sadly, one doesn’t laugh at the jokes [which are crass anyways], the songs too act as speed breakers, while the kiddie portions are half-baked. Ideally, the director could’ve avoided the unwanted add-ons [including the characters that suddenly arrive from other states to participate in the race] and the editor should’ve trimmed the film judiciously for a better impact.
The songs don’t help in carrying the film forward, except for one song when the auto rickshaw is being repaired. However, the background score is effective, especially towards the finale. The cinematography is inconsistent.
Given the fact that the story of Masti Express rests on his shoulders, one expects Rajpal to deliver a stunning performance, but he doesn’t. He is decent at best and there are times when one feels that he’s hamming big time. Johny Lever is loud, but that’s how his character is perceived. Divya Dutta stands out with a striking performance. Vijay Patkar is just right, Razzaq Khan gets to deliver some funny lines, while Rajkumar Kanojia is passable. Manoj Joshi is strictly okay. Ryan Pinto has screen presence and also has the trappings of a fine actor, provided he gets the right parts to portray…
